The production of rice in the R.Macedonia has a long tradition of  growing and accounts for 3% of the total area under cereals. The production of rice in the period 2008 - 2012 has seen constant growth of areas and quantities.The sown areas is increase of about 80% and the produced quantity about 50%.

Around the 84% of the total rice production in the country takes place in Kocani production region along the rivers Bregalnica, Zletovska river, Orizarska and Blatechka river.

In 2013 under rice were sown around 3.900 ha.

Trends in prices of rice in the R.Macedonia

The price of white rice on the wholesale markets in the country in the first half of October 2013 compared with the same period last year is increased by an average of around 8.5%. Last year white rice sold for 55 den / kg, and this year  for 60.00 den/ kg.

Retail prices in the first half of the month ranging from 59 to 80 den / kg. The average price of green market is 72.66 den / kg.

Purchase price of rice shell currently ranges from 21 to 26 den/ kg, depending on the quality.

Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Water Economy in coordination with the Turkish Agency for Cooperation and Coordination (TIKA), prepare Project development and production of quality rice for a period of 2 years.

This project plans to develop new highly productive rice varieties in order to improve the quality and quantity of rice in Macedonia, increasing income and improving rice producers of sales and marketing.

The project includes Agricultural Institute-Skopje, research station in Kocani and rice producers of Kocani and Vinica production region.

On the experimental fields at the Institute of Kocani is planted about 15 varieties of Turkish rice, and in 20 individual rice producers area of ​​about 20 hectares are planted 4 varieties.  Expectations are that the Turkish rice will get better production results than traditional varieties.
